Magnificent Magnolias
from: Lawn and Garden MagicWouldn't you love to have a garden with flora highly perfumed for flowers? Sure you would, and that's what you'll have with magnolia plants on their gardens. Magnolias are luciously fragrant which means you can put away your air fresheners and fill your home with magnolias instead. To have this natural air freshener, let's first familiarize you with the plant.
Magnolias are considered one of the most primitive of all flowering plants, and are in a group of over a hundred species of trees and large shrubs in the subfamily of Magnolioodeae of the family Magnoiaceae. Magnolias are typically showy and well scented in shades of white, pink, green, yellow or purple. Hoever, magnolias are neither pollinated by bees or butterflies. So what does the job? Actually, it's beetles that usually pollinate magnolia flowers.
It's interesting to note that magnolias don't produce nectar, although they do generate large amounts of pollen. With so much pollen, beetles have a great time consuming feeding on them. Another fascinating characteristic of magnolia is its fruits. The flowers are followed by, as are the blossoms, showy fruits in red and pink that display red, orange, or pink seeds each of which hangs from the fruit by a slim strand.
Magnolias can be planted in different soils and climates, but are usually associated with moist soils in varied deciduous and coniferous woods. This kind of foliage has been utilized for timber and even for medicinal purposes. However, the interesting magnolia flowers with their magnificent fragrance, beautiful large leaves, eye catching fruits are the main reason many people are eager to cultivate magnolias along with the fact they're easy to grow and stay relatively pest free.
Most magnolias are evergreen and stay pretty all year long, which makes them perfect for your backyard or front yard. If you have a preference for smaller shrubs in your garden, they're also available. Regardless of what you prefer, you'll find lot of classes of magnolias you'll love to have.
Planting time for magnolias will differ according to the class of the plant. For instance, evergreen magnolias, including southern magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora and sweetbay magnolia, and Magnolia virginiana are best planted in early spring, while deciduous magnolias should be planted in the fall or early spring. In southern regions, autumn is best and in the northe, gardeners choose spring.
Finally, it's a good idea to add some mulch after planting to control the condition of soil temperatures and moisture.
