Lily flowers or lilium candidum are the most significant flower symbol for Christians indicating purity. The Madonna lily is popular as the symbol of purity associated with virgins. In Greek poetry, lilies signified tenderness and were also referred to as the voice of muses. There's a Greek myth that explains how lilies were born from the milk of the goddess Hera. Lilies to this day still symbolize pure and virginal love in the Christian world.
The first description of lily flowers can be traced back to the Chinese Middle Ages, where lily plant blossomed until late autumn and there were three shades, red, purple and yellow. Other types of lilies, such as Lilium longiflorum, L. candidum and oriental lilies are highly scented, but in white shade only. Asiatic lilies, on the other hand, are extremely colorful, unfortunately they have no scent at all. Lilies are available year round.
Lilies are believed to have medicinal effects in people. Many different flowers are used to prepare cures in popular medicine. In China, some flowers are used as lucky charms, and others are believed to avert the evil eye. Lilies are among those with interesting properties. There is an interesting historical account that says people were interested in lilies due to their anti-toxic properties and their ability to cure depression. In Europe, lilies are used as a remedy for many kinds of sicknesses and diseases. However, you must be careful if you have cats because lilies can be poisonous to them.
Feng Shui believers take the lilies as symbol of summer and abundance. The meaning of lilies to the Chinese is forever in love. Lily was also the holy flower of Assyrians and has been decorated in the coat of arms of the kings of France since 1179.
All of these fascinating stories about lily flowers indicate why they've become a favorite flower all over the world, both past or at present. It’s true that flowers not only add colors and cheer to our lives, they're also linked to our past.
