The Sins And Blessings Of The St Augustine Grass

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

St Augustine grass is a tropical grass type from South America that managed to find its way to the mainland when horticulturists decided to import grass varieties capable of withstanding the most diverse environmental conditions. This grass type became an immediate favorites, especially in Florida where the weather condition is much akin to its environment of origin.

Planning to purchase St Augustine grass for your lawn? Here are some things to consider before you make your decision.

There are many benefits provided by this grass type which makes it a popular choice for many gardeners and landscape artists. Let's take a look at them.

* Very competitive against weeds. You won't have to worry about this grass type being deprived of essential nutrients because of the wild growth of weeds in its midst.

* Generally hardy. Given its rather abrasive texture, St Augustine grass can withstand physical abuse caused by people stepping on it, or weather conditions that would otherwise bring its body into ruin.

* Grows well in many kinds of soil. It's not very picky. It can even survive in soil with high salt content.

* Can grow everywhere. Want to cover those hard to reach areas with grass? This grass type will cling to any surface, and very sturdily at that. This includes angles positioned in a way that makes it impossible for you to transplant some grass. Simply grow St Augustine grass near such angles, and soon enough, it'll spread to cover the area.

There are, however, some disadvantages as well.

* Not that resistant against very low temperatures. This grass type will die once the temperature drops below 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

* It's not that resistant against drought either.

* Can become difficult to maintain. This grass type can grow quite aggressively. Reports indicate that it can grow by as much as three quarters of an inch per day. Regular mowing is required.

* New dwarf varieties have been developed, but some of them fare poorly. Since 1975, attempts to develop a subculture of this grass type have been made to take advantage of their tough exterior while making their length easier to manage. Great varieties such as Delmar, Palmetto and Seville have been created, but there are a lot of subcultures that are substantially weaker than the original form.

Whether or not this grass type is best for your needs depends on the type of lawn you have in mind. Will your locality's climatic conditions be favorable? Will you be able to spare the extra time required for its maintenance? Will its distinct texture be right for your family's garden activities?
