How to Make the Grass Greener on YOUR Side of the Fence

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

As summer approaches, it's time to consider the care of your lawn. Regarding the maintenance for your lawn, you can decide to allow your grass to become greener and healthier than what it has been in the past. Some lawns are greener than others mainly because of how much nutrients the yard receives. How a lawn is cared for determines how much green they produce in return. Proper maintenance allows nutrients from the soil to be help the grass become greener and healthier. Watering your lawn properly, mowing and aerating your yard, will make a greener looking lawn as well.

An important factors that may be causing your grass to not be as green as it should is its location. For example, if your lawn is shaded by lots of trees it's harder for it to receive the right amount of sunlight each day, which can eventually lead to the grass dimming out. If trees are preventing sunlight from reaching the grass, try trimming the branches to allow more sunlight to get through.

Also consider the amount of traffic moving through your lawn. Heavy traffic across your grass will cause the aeration needed through the soil to not move properly. This reduces the amount of oxygen available to the grass and may also prevent water from moving into the soil as much as it should. Solve this problem by aerating your lawn. If you notice the soil is compact, or if there are flat places, then you should definitely aerate your lawn. However, don't do this in the middle of summer, as it will stress out the grass. To help your lawn to become greener, it's best to aerate in the spring and, if possible, in the fall.

To help make your grass greener you'll need to water it at the right times and with the right amount of water. It's best to water in the early morning, as this will allow the water to move into the soil instead of evaporating in heat of the sun. Make sure you water it evenly throughout the yard and not in patches. One quick and easy way to do this is to use an irrigation system. Also, make sure the soil isn't remaining too wet, or becoming too dry between the days you water, which will help your grass become greener.

Another factor in making sure that your grass becomes greener is making sure that lawn thatch and debris aren't taking over your yard. This may mean raking your lawn consistently and removing thatch that is over a half-inch in your yard. This will allow more aeration to move through your grass, as well as allow the water and nutrients to move freely through the grass and soil.

The soil is the soil should have the right pH balance, as well as the right texture with the grains. If it doesn't, add compost or fertilizer to balance out the soil which will help give the grass the proper amount of nutrients. The type of soil, or problems you see in the grass, and the time of year you apply fertilizer, will determine the type of fertilizer you should use on the lawn.

Also consider when to mow your grass. Be aware of the mowing height and clippings you should use. If you cut your grass too short, it may stress out your grass. If you don't cut your grass enough, it may cause problems with water and sunlight moving into the soil.

Aeration, proper nutrients, the environment around the lawn, as well as mowing properly are all factors in how green your lawn will be. If you do proper maintenance on your lawn, you'll easily be able to produce a green, healthy and attractive lawn.
