Mini Greenhouses

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Not all good greenhouses are big and spacious. This may be ideal for big plant growers and commercial greenhouses, anyone who only has a small area for a greenhouse can still own one by building a mini version of a greenhouse.

A mini greenhouse is a great option for gardeners who love planting and growing crops but have a limited garden space. A mini greenhouse can be placed anywhere, including balconies, patios, backyards and decks as the typical size is about 6 square feet. Even though they're small, they do provide the same benefits as a regular-sized greenhouse.

Mini greenhouses are also a great way for a beginner to get started. Rather than venturing into building a big one, it doesn't hurt to learn how a greenhouse works and get educated on the various requirements needed for ideal growing conditions for the plants. This learning process for novices can be done with a mini greenhouse.

Your mini greenhouse can be used to get plant growth started before the cold season in a particular area. Once the weather warms up, the healthy plants and crops planted inside the greenhouse can be transplanted outside in the garden, which allows for early harvesting of crops. A large selection of seeds can also be planted in the greenhouse, making planting a much more fun for hobbyists and gardeners.

An excellent variety of herbs and lettuce can easily be grown healthily and successfully in mini-greenhouses year round. Other vegetables, such as Swiss chard, spinach and kale can also be planted and grown inside a mini greenhouse, all of which would make a great bowl of salad with freshly-picked greens even during the cold season.

Mini greenhouses can also be used with tender perennial plants, by protecting them from ice, snow and frost during the winter season. All you have to do is place them into plant containers and they will stay healthy inside the mini structure until spring. Once winter breaks, these plants can then be transplanted into the garden outside for a healthier environment.

Decorative plants usually found inside the house can also be given a healthy change of pace by placing them inside a mini greenhouse and placing them outside during the summer. A mini structure offers tropical plants a humid climate and, just like the regular greenhouse, a mini will maximize the amount of sunlight and make the most out of the heat absorbed. It also provides the needed protection of plants from rain, wind, destructive insects and other pests in the garden, such as rabbits.

Unfortunately, since mini greenhouses are as light as possible because of their small structure, they can be easily blown down by the wind or knocked over by pets and kids. Therefore, it's recommended that these small gardens be placed or mounted into a wall or garage rather than be a free standing structure. It's always best to place them in a location where they will get enough sunlight, but is safe from outside factors.

There are several do-it-yourself kits available that include complete instructions and a step-by-step guide for a beginner to build a mini greenhouse in no time. These kits usually inexpensive and can commonly accommodate up to three shelves.

Should you choose to have a full-sized greenhouse or just go with a miniature one? Even if lots of space is available for a full-sized greenhouse, a small one may be more practical. If the main purpose of having a greenhouse is to grow only a few plants, germinate seeds, or provide protection during the colder season, having a mini greenhouse should be just fine. Also, the cost to maintain a small greenhouses is significantly lower than the full-sized ones due to a number of factors that need to be maintained.

Therefore, it's highly recommended that gardeners have a greenhouse, even a mini one. This structure will prove to be a good investment and yield better results than just traditional gardening. And if your someone who really enjoys caring for plants and harvesting a few crops, greenhouse-gardening can definitely offer you a lifetime of enjoyment.
