Finding the Best Bonsai Tree for Newbies
from: Lawn and Garden Magic
Growing and maintaining Bonsai trees is a great hobby, but it can be a challenge, especially for beginners. There is, however, a favorite bonsai that is very well suited for anyone just starting out and that's the Jade Bonsai, which is also known as the Small Leaf Jade or Elephant Plant. The Jade Bonsai is native to South Africa.
Once nice thing about Jade Tree Bonsai is that they develop faster than most other varieties of bonsai. With it's extensive trunk it can grow up to 3 - 4 meters in the wild. It's succulent in nature with a great capacity to hold water in its thick leaves, branches and trunk. This, of course, provides another advantage for the beginner in that doesn't require a lot of watering compared to other types.
As a novice bonsai grower, you'll quickly discover how lovely the Jade is and how easy it is to maintain. A young plant has green bark that gradually turns reddish brown and then to slate gray as it matures. It's leaves are quite flesshy and have a blue-green color that produces star-shaped, pinkish to purple flowers during the fall season. Another nice characteristic is that its thick and slender trunk and branches make beautiful cascades, making the Jade Bonsai a beautiful plant for both home and office.
Even though the Jade Bonsai is relatively easy to maintain, it still requires proper care that is suitable for its needs. Since it's a tropical plant, it has problems dealing with cold climates. Therefore, if you live in a cold area, you're advised to keep it an indoor plant. On the other hand, if you live in a warm climate with lots of full of sunshine, the plant will do much better outdoors. Always water a Jade Tree Bonsai regularly, but be careful about adding too much water. Rremember to just keep the soil moist.
As with any bonsai, pruning and shaping is an imporatant part of caring for the plant. You'll need to prune which will provide stronger truncal growth and also reduce the leaf-size. When you reduce the trunk, it encourages new growth from the wound after a week or two. Make sure you pinch gently on the trunk and branches since the Jade tree is soft and delicate.
You will soon discover that the Jade tree reacts quite well to wiring and can be contoured into new shapes within three to four weeks. You must, however, be careful when wiring because the branches will have a tendency to snap off if your try to bent them too much. Branches can also become turgid when full of water, so be conservative when watering prior to wiring which will decrease the chances of snapping.
Finally, Jade bonsai should be repotted every two years in the early spring. Make sure you dry the soil fully before repotting and then place it in a shady location until you see new growth. Once this is accomplished, water it as usual.
