Bonsai gardening, a traditional eastern method of planting that incorporates nature and art, is rapidly gaining popularity throughout the world. What is unique about bonsai is the use of containers to plant miniature trees while special gardening techniques are employed to make and keep the plants small. Methods are also applied to grow the plants in interesting and unique shapes. Bonsai gardening is a fabulous hobby that also provides an amazingly beautiful display of unique plants for your home and landscape.

Indoor and Outdoor Gardening

Since bonsai gardening is done in uses containers, it can be done both indoors and outdoors. If fact, bonsai can be maintained in a small home or apartment to help add to the beauty of any room. Also, bonsai will thrive in both natural or artificial light, so the plants can easily be maintained on a sunny window sill or under a lamp. Bonsai trees and plants are relatively easy to take care of. As with any plant, they will need watering on a regular basis to keep the soil moist in the warm months -- some people prefer to mist the leaves. However, during the winter season, many bonsai plants and trees become dormant.

A Bonsai Hobby

Bonsai is a most interesting and fun hobby for anyone who choosed to get started. You can get started with an established plant and as you learn the appropriate care and techniques, you will no doubt want to keep adding more bonsai trees and plants to your collection. In fact, you'll probably to keep learning everything you can about bonsai gardening. You'll soon discover there are many bonsai groups and clubs locally and on the Internet where you can share your interest with fellow bonsai growers.

Getting your new hobby started won't require a large amount of spending in either time or money. Of course, established plants will be more expensive than normal houseplants, but they'll live for many years to come. You'll also start to learn how to prune and shape your bonsai plants and trees and discover that general maintenance of your bonsai will take no more time than caring for any houseplant, but will bring much more satisfaction in the long run. It's always best to pick out hardy plants when starting so you can develop your own techniques, and as your skills become more advanced, you'll find yourself gleefully spending much more time and money working at this fulfilling hobby.
