A Bit of Bonsai History

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Bonsai plants first appeared in China thousand years ago when the practice of growing specimen trees inside pots began. Referred to as 'pun-sai’, these plants had rugged foliage with trunks that were often mistaken for animals such as birds and dragons.

This lead to the Chinese bonsai inspiring many legends and myths. The shape of a bonsai is often associated with serpents and dragons and so caring for them becam an esteemed hobby in China.

Japan adopted the Chinese practice during the Kamakura period. This was around the time that Zen Buddhism was spreading throughout Asia and also the period in history when bonsai was first introduced to Japan. Throughout the years, these plants were no longer limited in Buddhist monasteries for the Buddhist monks to care for and became a symbol of the aristocrats and, in time, the symbol of honor and prestige in the Japanese culture.

Later, the philosophy and ideals the bonsai held were challenged. Bonsai represented a mixture of ancient beliefs as well as the philosophies from the East that harmonizes man with his nature and his soul.

The Japanese elite were responsible for bringing the hobby of shaping bonsai indoors, becomin a crucial part of Japanese culture. Bonsais were displayed on shelves inside households and wer no longer plants found only in the garden.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Japanese art reached its peak and was highly regarded by surrounding cultures. Bonsai started to becom a collection for a number of races in additon to the Japanese. This art form has now been established in traditions and cultures all over the world.

At some point Bonsai started to tak on different styles. These techiques vary, however bonsai artists will always take the challenge to regularly introduce a new concepts, so much so that even small buildings can become an art form, known as the art of bon-kei.
