What Is A Bonsai Plant?

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Bonsai is the ancient Eastern art of growing miniature trees and literally means, "tree in tray". Bonsai are trees and shrubs that are grown uniquely small in containers. Bonsai was originally meant to bring art and nature together and some also found it was a religious experience. Bonsai plants aren't typically dwarfs, but are regular trees and shrubs intentionally grown small using various and specific gardening techniques.

Much of the art of bonsai consists of imitating nature. Bonsai gardeners use containers and trays to plant the trees so they have the appearance of being in a natural setting. The container used is important to the overall look which makes it an important part of the process. Bonsai gardeners seek out containers that have a natural look and for the way they specifically display the plant. The plant is formed by cutting, pruning and shaping the growing tree.

Traditionally, bonsai were obtained by finding a suitable specimen in nature and replanting it. Bonsai can now be grown from seeds or shoots and you can even take standard houseplants and modify them with pruning and cutting. Mature bonsai are the easiest for the beginner to work with while learning the pruning and shaping techniques and skills required to be successful, but the process can be a fun and rewarding hobby.

You can find established bonsai plants are at garden centers, through bonsai specialty shops and even on the Internet since they can be successfully shipped anywhere in the world. Bonsa plants and trees will live for many years if properly cared for, which is a good idea to retain their value. In fact, in ancient times these beautiful plant specimens were so valuable they were passed down from one generation to the next.

Once you've decided to become a bonsai gardener, you discover there are many varieties of plants that can be used for bonsai, including traditional varieties such as the juniper, the jade and the fig. Conifers or evergreens are often used for bonsai as well. They're hardy plants that grow slowly. Bonsai plants usually require sunlight during their growing season and become dormant during the winter months. You can also provide artificial lighting for a more regulated environment in which the bonsai grow and thrive.
