Caring for Wisteria Bonsai

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

For the cultivating of a Wisteria bonsai, the main goal is to let it flower using various techniques. What you should know about Wisteria is that it won't bloom until it reaches a specific age -- usually en years.

While you're waiting for it to bloom, you'll need to prune the shoots that have been developed and cut it to 5 - 6 inches against its trunk, leaving 4 - 6 leaves on a shoot. This is importat because it will help with the flowering of the Wisteria bonsai.

You must do the pruning after the flowering season and it should also be pruned three times before the fall season arrives. At mid-winter, cut the spurs to 4 inches, leaving three buds.

Once you're repeatedly pruned the Wisteria Bonsai, you'll have to double your efforts during the winter months. It's important that you control the growth of the bonsai, especially at this time because you'll discover that it's a lot more vigorous than normal, so you can let the plant produce a lot of leaves and flowers. The process of repeatedly pruning it will result in the foliage being more compact and you'll discover that the flowers produced will be more colorful.

It's a good idea to repot the Wisteria bonsai as soon as you begin to see the first sign of flowering and make sure you supply your Wisteria bonsai with the right food and locate it in a low nitrogen area to allow the Wisteria to take in all the nitrogen it needs. You'll also discover that if it gets too much nitrogen, it will tend to overgrow in foliage rather than flowering. This can be controlled by using fertilizer specifically for Wisteria bonsai.

Wisteria is one of the most popular bonsai so it's a good one to consider growing. Wisteria bonsai can withstand a lot of rain and sun, however, you must protect it from the wind. Keep in mind they also need more water compared to other trees and shrubs so it's important to keep it moist, especially during the hot summer months.

You can put your Wisteria in a container and water it regularly. Always make sure you dry out the tray after watering to make sure the roots don’t drown becaise if the soil bottles up with too much water, the roots could get waterlogged.

You will be able to train your Wisteria bonsai in various styles. As long as the flowers are cascading, then watering shouldn't be a problem.

Finally, you will need to repot your Wisteria Bonsai every 2 to 3 years using basic bonsai soil. It's best to repot during early spring, which will assist you with the flowering and propagation of the Wisteria buds.
