How to Take Care of Your Juniper Bonsai
from: Lawn and Garden Magic
Juniper Bonsai are fast growing and responsive to training, which means you'll quickly see the results of your labor when taking care of one. These non-flowering and evergreen conifer have long, sprawling branches that are easily styled to almost any shape you desire.
Juniper Bonsai are one of the most popular forms of bonsai, and they have numerous varieties, including the Japanese Garden Junipers, Shimpaku, Chinese Junipers, Green Mound. Since they're easy to manage, the Juniper can grow indoors and outdoors, but must remain outside during the winter months so it can experience the dormant stage. If you carefully follow these guidelines for proper care, you'll be able to grow Junipers that flourish without any difficulty at all.
* Water your Juniper the same as you would for most bonsai, however, before watering, check the soil by sticking your finger about half inch into the soil or, if it;s on a rock, lift it and feel the soil underneath. If the soil is still moist, limit the amount of water you pour onto your bonsai to prevent root rotting. It's a general rule to never let your bonsai go dry for long periods of time. Although there are bonsai that do better with short dry periods, keeping your bonsai dry for extended periods is likely to kill your plant. As you water your bonsai, do make sur you allow the soil to absorb the water first before pouring more on. You'll eventually be able to determine the proper schedule that will vary depending on the climate in your area.
* Your Juniper requires filtered sunlight, so avoid exposing it to direct sun.
* It's important to use fertilizer. Organic liquid fertilizer is best and you should feed your plant once every two weeks during spring and fall. A chemical fertilizer can also be used, however it's important that you dilute it first. Always follow the instructions given by the manufacturer.
* A Juniper should be repotted every two years when it's young or about 5-6 years old and then every 3-5 years thereafter. Although it can be repotted any time of the year, the best time is during spring or fall. Once it's repoted, place it in a cool and shady area and give liberal amounts of water until new roots appear.
* A Juniper should also be provided with proper winter care by keeping it under cool temperatures, usually under 600F to allow it to rest. Always try to avoid exposing it to dry winds and very cold temperatures. This can be done by using window wells, mulch beds or enclosed unheated rooms.
If you follow these instructions, you'll help to maintain a healthy Juniper bonsai that is always beautiful. You can investigate more about Juniper bonsai as you continue to become a bonsai master in your own right.
