The Origin of Bonsai
from: Lawn and Garden Magic
Bonsai is the traditional eastern practice of growing miniature trees, shrubs and conifers in containers. The origins aren't exactly clear, but bonsai can be traced back more than 1,200 years to Japan and China. Bonsai became part of Japanese culture and is associated with religious thoughts as well as naturalism which has the belief that nature, such as mountains, trees and rocks, have souls. Some people even suggest that the twisted and contorted shapes of these beautiful miniature trees represents the bodies of the immortal in the next world.
In Japanese culture, bonsai has been perfected as an art form that deals with beauty and correctness. This strong desire for perfection in imitating nature is what people seek in the practice of the art of bonsai. Some bonsai are perfected and aged to the point they actually become a prized Japanese family heirloom. The word bonsai is originates from the Japanese words bon meaning "tray" and sai meaning "planting". Although traditionally bonsai were cultivated outdoors, they were grown in containers or pots placed near the home.
Many Japanese paintings and drawings dating back centuries depict bonsai, which was often the focal point of Japanese homes. Bonsai was relatively unknown to the western world until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1909 a bonsai exhibit was held in London, England which led to many people in England and eventually throughout the world, taking up the art of bonsai.
Growing bonsai Indoors is a relatively new practice that wasnt originally accepted by true bonsai enthusiasts. However, indoor bonsai has advanced in the last several decades and is quite often the only way those who live in colder climates can enjoy the hobby of bonsai growing. With widespread growing of bonsai indoors, the art has advanced to include many species that would otherwise not be used because of colder winter weather. When growing bonsai indoors, growers are able to use special soil and provide warm growing temperatures, fortified with natural light that allow indoor bonsai to thrive.
Bonsai is definitely an art form that requires a lot of patience since it can take many months and even years to see the results of your work. You can get started growing bonsai in many different ways, but the easiest way is to start with a bonsai that's already trained. Containers used to grow bonsai are highly prized for their individuality and so you should always choose a container that compliments and harmonizes with the plants.
