Caring for Serissa Bonsai

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Serissa were initially discovered in Southeast Asia located in damp and moist open woodland. Serissa is a tiny evergreen shrub that can grow to about 50 cms. and has leaves on opposite sides. The flowers produced by the Serissa bonsai are funell shaped which has resulted in the nickname “tree of a thousand stars.”

Serissa is cultivated by many bonsai enthusiasts and comes in many different varieties. They're also found throughout Europe, especially in Britain. It should be noted that Serissa are well known for being hard to maintain, especially for new bonsai growers. You will find that they sometimes drop their leaves, or they turn yellow, if proper growing conditions aren't followed.

Coming from a subtropical location, Serissa bonsai needs to be grown at a temperature below 7 degree Celsius. If you're a bonsai grower, it's recommended that if you're growing Serissa, you should consider indoor cultivation. However, a Serissa tree should be provided with at least a couple of weeks outside so it can get both day and night temperature required. But make sure you remember to bring the plant indoors if the temperature should drop below 7 degree Celsius, whether day or night. Look for a bright position for your plant that isn't too sunny.

Serissa bonsai don't appreciate being continuously wet from watering and much prefer their roots be moist instead. Therefore, the watering process of a serissa bonsai should include checking the dry compost regularly. Water thoroughly, but try not to drain it too much. It's okay to water the Serissa bonsai on a daily basis, but you should check to see if the plant requires misting.

You should remove the serissa’s suckers by styling the trunk in such a way that it becomes multiple. You should also prune a couple of leaves of the bonsai in order to shape it properly.

If you discover your Serissa bonsai starting to yellow, it will become prone to diseases and pests. If you properly place the plant in a moist and well-regulated area with the correct temperature, you won't have to worry because the right humidity will definitely help to prevent diseases and pests from attacking the Serissa.

Serissa can be styled in any style as long as it can grow to its small or medium size -- which is about 50 cms.

Some Serissa have thick trunks, so you should get a pot that is shallow to help the plant to appropriately grow in its container. You may also consider getting a decorative container to help with the overall aesthetic of your beautiful bonsai.
