Jade: A Popular Bonsai Plant

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Jade is a wonderfully succulent evergreen shrub you'll discover to be easily adapted to growth as a Bonsai. Since Jade plants are found in many locations all over the world, there are many varieties of available. As a Bonsai plant, Jade is hardy and easy to grow easily adapted to the art of Bonsai.

Jade is also a shrub that generally has several trunks sprouting from a single root ball. The winter months is the dormant period for these shrubs which means they require less watering at this time of the year. They prefer a weak fertilizer that should be used about every four to five weeks in the warmth of spring, summer and early autumn months only.

Since it's one of the most common Bonsai plants, it can be started by modifying a regular Jade houseplant. Jade is considered an indoor Bonsai and thrives with very little fuss, making it the ideal plant for a new Bonsai enthusiast to get started. You'll discover that pruning is quite easy and can be done throughout the year. You should cut off any crossing branches, keeping only those standing straight upright. There's usually no need to use wire.

Another advantage is that repotting usually isn't needed for several years. When that time comes, you should use well-drained potting soil mixture and repot in the spring. The root ball must stay largely intact, so remove only about 10% of it when repotting.

Chinese Jade: (Crassula arborescens) Chinese Jad is known for its sturdy branches and thick green leaves. It's a slow-growing variety that produces small star-shaped white flowers when mature. This plant prefers moderate to warm temperatures that stay above about 50 degrees centigrade. Find your plant a warm, sunny window and don't allow the soil to become extremely dry.

Jade Plant: (Crassula ovata) This plant is a multibranched shrub with green succulent leaves that are pear shaped with a red edge. The trunk becomes thick and gnarled after several years and it should be kept indoors. Since it does well in a sunny area, misting isn't usually needed since the leaves are thick and retain water well. So you can keep the soil slightly moist but not wet.
