Bonsai Pruning Tools
from: Lawn and Garden MagicBonsai pruning is an extremely important part of the art of Bonsai growing that should be carefully studied to ensure you learn the proper procedures. Bonsai pruning can be compared to drawing by connecting dots. It's necessary for you to follow a pre-designed path and that will give you the desired shape. How much you prepare before pruning is something you should focus on before getting started.
Tools for Bonsai Pruning
Before you get started pruning your Bonsai, make sure you have all the necessary tools handy and you know how to use them.
Bonsai Shears: Special scissors that are designed for Bonsai trimming or pruning. There are many types of Bonsai shears available, so make sure that you purchase what will work best for your needs.
Concave Branch Cutter: This Bonsai pruning tool is used for removing branches, which is often necessary to get a particular shape. What you'll appreciate about concave branch cutters is that they effectively cut off branches with the little or no damage to the Bonsai tree.
Wire and Wire Cutters: You use wire for repotting and molding Bonsai plants into the shapes you want so, of course, you're going to need some wire cutters to cut your wire.
Miscellaneous Tools: As you gain knowledge and experience in Bonsai pruning, the tools you have available will continue to grow. Eventually, you'll likely want additional tools, including a root hook, knob cutters, soil sieves and trunk benders.
Wiring before Bonsai Pruning
Bonsai wiring is done to effectively mold and style the plant into a specific shape. You can think of a Bonsai plant as a piece of fabric and wiring is what helps you make a pattern from it in order to produce a nice outfit. Wiring will help you to permanently stabilize and maintain the direction of specific parts of the Bonsai plant.
There are two kinds of wires you can use on your Bonsai plants. Some prefer copper for its durability, however, they do require constant monitoring. If you forget to check your copper wire regularly, copper wires have a tendency to place too much pressure on your Bonsai plants and could cause scarring. Another option is to use aluminum wires. Though less durable than copper wires, aluminium wires are more flexible and require less monitoring. If you should forget to monitor your Bonsai's wiring, aluminum wires will cause less damage to your plant than copper wires.
