Bonsai Care Instructions

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

If you're getting ready to buy a bonsai, it's a good idea to study information on general horticulture and basic care of potted plants. You wont grow a bonsai with much success unless you have enough general knowledge about plants plus a deep understanding on the specifics of bonsai care.

If you already own a bonsai, but you don't have any idea what specific specie it belongs to, then it's likely you won’t have any idea how to properly take care of it. Therefore the place to start in learning basic bonsai care is to determine the type of plant you have. For instance, if it belongs to the deciduous bonsai type and you decide to place it indoors, you'll likely kill it. Likewise, a tropical bonsai placed outdoors in the cold weather is also going to die. If you've having a hard time figuring out your bonsai's specie, don't be afraid to get help from people who can identify the plant for you.

Your research will no doubt tell you that watering is the most challenging part of bonsai care. Your bonsai will more likely die from improper watering technique than any other cause. So check the moisture content of the plant’s soil on a daily basis by inserting a chopstick or toothpick through the soil. If the chopstick or toothpick isn't wet but just damp, it's time to water the plant thoroughly.

Available light and the area you locate your bonsai are also importants parts of the bonsai care instructions. Bonsai needs light, however, the amoutn of light required will differ according to location, plant specie and climate. Some plants will require the full impact of the sun, while others may just need a dose of indirect sunlight throughout growth season. If you live somewhere where it's impossible to give your tropical bonsai its required amount of sunlight, then it should be placed outdoors during its growing season. If your bonsai gets less sun less than it needs, you can try using artificial light to compensate for the absence of real sunlight.

There are no specific bonsai care instructions that work for all types of bonsai. Each species has different needs, and should be treated distinctly. They may look the same, but there's always a variation you should be aware of for your specific bonsai plant.
