Choosing a Bonsai Pot

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Once you've decided to become a bonsai gardening one of your needs will be a bonsai pot. Since there are lots of different bonsai pots to choose from -- shapes, sizes, and colors -- choosing a particular pot can be a challenge. Aesthetics are important, of course, but your bonsai plant will require more care and attention than just choosing a pot.

Finding the perfect pot isn't always easy. If you make a bad choice, the pot can actually reduce the tree's impact. On the other hand, a pot that's chosen well works to emphasize the beauty of your bonsai plant and allows it to achieve its maximum potential.

There are several factors to consider when choosing the right bonsai pot. First, is the pots' size. The appropriate dimensions can be determined by using guidelines based on the dimensions of of the type of bonsai plant you're growing. Generally, the depth of the pot should be the same as the diameter of the bonsai's trunk above the soil level.

Another consideration is the style and shape of the bonsai pots, which should match your bonsai plants as well. So take a good hard look at your plants and assess their characteristics. There's such a thing as masculine plants and feminine plants, or a plant that's a mixture of both but with one dominant characteristic. However, this type of assessment is subjective. But keep in mind that a very masculine plant won't look nice in a feminine pot, and vice versa.

You'll have lots of color selection when choosing your bonsai pot as well. Your plant's distinctive feature can be used as the basis for pot color selection. Thus, your bonsai plant and the color of its pot should blend well together. Use the plant's feature bark as a guideline. For flower-bearing plants, the color of the chosen pot should complement that of the flowers'.

You'll also discover numerous textures of bonsai pots to choose from, and each is supposed to enhance the plant. For example, feminine plants are better off when they're placed in pots with smooth finishes. Pots with heavier textures will better complement masculine plants.

Choosing from different bonsai pots can be confusing, but this is something you'll need to learn. With time and experience growing bonsai, and your good sense and personal taste, picking out the right bonsai pot will eventually be as easy as pie.
