Growing Your Special Bonsai Garden
from: Lawn and Garden Magic
Bonsai gardens are beautiful places to visit and appreciate the wonderful art and nature to be found, a place that's brought much pleasure to many people for centuries. Bonsai is the art of growing plants in small containers by taking a regular sized trees or shrubs and growing them into small shapes using special techniques. There a lot of different ways to get started growing Bonsai, but the best way for a beginner is to purchase established plants, which provides a good starting point.
Making your own special Bonsai garden should start with a plan. Figure out the best location where you'll keep your Bonsai garden and the amount of light it receives. You may need to add artificial light, depending on the location, to ensure the Bonsai has enough light, especially during the growth period.
Choose your plants based on the size, shape and ultimate design. You should also consider the type of care the plants will need. There are special types of designs for Bonsai, most of which use only single Bonsai plants, while some use small groupings.
Set about planning the landscape design you hope to accomplish, and then choose a container. The container is just about as important to the final look as the plants, so choose carefully and wisely. A container made from natural materials such as clay is usually best, but make sure it has one or two holes on the bottom, which are used for drainage as well as to secure the trunk on some trees.
When you plant your bonsai you must pay special attention to the soil. A good soil mix is necessary to the growth and development of the root system and thus the entire plant. Since plants get their nutrients through the roots, the soil mixture should contain vermiculite to help retain moisture and provide some air pockets for the roots.
Bonsai require trimming, pruning and wiring to for proper shaping. There are many types of shapes and certain plants take to certain shapes better than others. You must always prune the leaves only during non-growth periods. Use wires to gently pull branches and trunks in the way you want them to grow. Once they've grown for several months the wires can be repositioned.
As the root system grow you should repot your Bonsai every year or two. Remove the plant and snip part of the root ball away, keeping it small. As you improve in the art of Bonsai growing techniques, your Bonsai garden will be a place of beauty and provide eveyone who visits years of pleasure and appreciation for nature.
