The Right Medium For Your Bonsai Plants

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Choosing the right potting soil to plant your Bonsai is the most critically important factor that will determine whether your Bonsai thrives or dies. Potting mix and potting soil are virtually the same thing -- a mixture of loam, sand, clay, peat and plant foods. Your mix is extremely important to the longevity of your Bonsai.

Soil, of course, provides water and nutrients to the roots to ensure nutrition and growth and your potting soil mixture must be able to keep the roots well drained and contain air for the roots to breathe. In addition, the soil must be secure enough to hold the plant in place so it doesn't lean or tip in its container. Shallow containers should have wires inserted through the bottom holes in order to help hold the plants in place.

You discover a large variety of ready-made potting soil mixtures at your garden center that typically contain vermiculite or perlite, which helps improve the water retention of the mixture. There are specialty mixes available from Bonsai suppliers, which are mixed specifically for specific varieties of Bonsai. If you're a beginner, you might want to start with a pre-made mixture whenever possible, however, remember that you should never plant your Bonsai with soil directly from your garden.

If you have purchased a pre-potted Bonsai, ask the specialist for a bag of additional soil. You'll need to re-pot your Bonsai and should maintain using the same soil it's growing in. When getting potting soil, pick up only enough to last several months. Keep potting soil in a well-sealed bag to keep it moist and free from insects and store unused potting soil in a cool, dry place.

As with any potted plants, Bonsai should be fed regularly. Get yourself some plant food specially designed for Bonsai plants, but don't feed a Bonsai during its dormant period. Make sure the soil is moist before adding the food.

You should wait at least three weeks after repotting to feed your Bonsai. Organic fertilizers are less harsh and take longer to break down, so you should consider them a good choice for Bonsai. When feeding your plants make sure that the soil surface area isn't compact since compacted soil prevents water and plant food from reaching the plants roots. Loosen the topsoil gently using a stick.
