Choosing the Right Bonsai Pot

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

The relationship between a Bonsai tree and its pot is more than meets the eye. In Bonsai language, the pot is frequently called the frame, while the Bonsai tree itself is the picture. Obviously, uniting the two together will create framed perfection.

Tips on Choosing the Right Bonsai Pot

It’s important to purchase only pots specially manufactured for Bonsai trees since they're pre-designed to have two types of holes: drainage holes because Bonsai trees require lots of watering and holes for passage of training wire used to retain the shape of Bonsai trees when potting.

Size is important especially when you’re still taking care of a growing Bonsai tree. Nursery or wild trees have more stringent requirements when it comes to pots, so if it’s your first time caring for a Bonsai tree, do make sure you consult with a professional when you need advice.

Consider the length, width and height of your Bonsai pot. Growth can be affected adversely if you choose a pot of the wrong dimensions. For the width, make sure the pot is just as wide as the length of the stems or branches. The height, on the other hand, should just be of similar measurement to the overall width of the trunk.

Shape can often affect the rate of growth of Bonsai trees, so be certain you’ve chosen the right shape as well for your plant.

Color is only important if you believe in color psychology or aesthetics. Pots are available in solid colors if you prefer to go for understated beauty, or printed or polychromatic designs if you wish for your garden to become more eye-catching.

Also consider the pot material. If you would like something durable, choose Bonsai pots made of heavy duty plastic as these are non-breakable and come with a lifetime warranty. Clay pots are popular but too easily break. Cement Bonsai pots are sturdier but cost more. Wooden pots are ideal if you're looking for a more authentic look.

Finally, consider the landscape of your garden. The Bonsai pot you choose can make your tree either stand out or blend in with the landscape. Choose whichever way you prefer.
