The Importance of Pruning Bonsai

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Pruning is a common practice among gardeners for many different type of plants and is an essential parts of the care and growing of Bonsai. Pruning Bonsai is required so your tree can maintain the desired shape while also promoting growth. There are many different bonsai styles which means there will be many different ways to pruning Bonsai as well. Thus it becomes very important for you to learn the correct way to prune your specific Bonsai plant to ensure you grow a beautiful and healthy tree.

When pruning a Bonsai, first consider whether it's the right season for pruning your bonsai. Some tree species can be pruned any time of the year but there are also many that must be pruned only at a specific time of the year. It's best to consult with a bonsai expert for advice when you're getting startef to find out the proper time of the year to prune your tree.

Once you've finished pruning, you'll need to allow the bonsai enough recovery time. Some tree types recover faster than others, so you'll need to learn proper care in addition to maintaining the right pruning schedule to ensure your Bonsai stays healthy for many years. When pruning Bonsai, the main focus is the tree trunk. Working on the tree trunk more than the other parts of the tree will create the mature and ancient looking tree you want. If there are any areas on the trunk that aren't growing as much as they should, leave a few extra branches to help stimulate growth.

Removing all problematic branches is important when pruning Bonsai. These are branches that are crossing each other or growing in areas that will ruin the aesthetics of the tree. It's also important to note that pruning the roots is usually necessary, especially if you've done some heavy pruning on the Bonsai trunk and branches. This will prevent a sudden incredible growth spurt, which could result from imbalanced pruning.

A good technique for pruning Bonsai is called finger pruning, which is applicable to any evergreen coniferous tree such as cedars and junipers. In this method, new shoots that appear in areas where there should be no branches are pinched out to maintain the look of the Bonsai and to help promote thicker foliage.

For pruning deciduous Bonsai such as maple trees or elm trees, make sure you use sharp scissors, but cut only using the scissors' tip. Pruning Bonsai leaves is done on both deciduous and tropical plant and tree species to remove leaves that are unsightly and to maintain the right leaf size for the Bonsai.

You will discover there are different aspects to pruning Bonsai, from its roots to leaves and it's very important that you learn the proper way of pruning each part of the tree to ensure balance, beauty and health.
