Proper Use of Bonsai Fertilizer
from: Lawn and Garden MagicSince Bonsai plants are grow in small containers, they can't take in a lot of nutrients, which is why bonsai fertilizer is so critical for the health of your plant. Properly fertilizing a Bonsai on a regular basis will ensure your Bonsai grows healthy as well as in a controlled manner.
Bonsai fertilizer will provide: Nitrogenous (N) for general tree growth, Phosphorus (P) for fruit and bud development, and Potassium (K) which will increase its adaptability during the winter season. Each Bonsai fertilizer has an NPK value that refers to these substances and this value is important as it will determine which is the right fertilizer for a particular season. Calcium and sulfur are other substances of a Bonsai fertilizer.
Since nitrogenous encourages growth, you should use a Bonsai fertilizer that has a high content of nitrogenous in the early spring. As well, since potassium prepares the Bonsai plant for winter, it means it inhibits growth so you must choose a Bonsai fertilizer with a high potassium or K value to use in late summer and fall.
It's important to choose the right NPK value when using a Bonsai fertilizer. If you get this right, you won't need to worry too much about using special fertilizers, though these might be helpful for spring and autumn use.
When to use a bonsai fertilizer
The routine for Bonsai fertilizing is ususally from early spring until fall. Apply a firm Bonsai fertilizer each month and use a liquid Bonsai fertilizer each week. Firm fertilizers are used to help the soil and liquid is applied to the leaves.
How to use a bonsai fertilizer
When adding Bonsai fertilizer the recommended use is about half of what is used for regular plants. It's best to wait two months after repotting a Bonsai before fertilizing and apply more fertilizer to a young Bonsai you'll soon be styling. Always use a Bonsai fertilizer with the correct NPK value in the right season. If you're not sure what value to use, consult your local nursury or do some research online.
You should use a Bonsai fertilizer with a value of 10N-5P-5K for early spring and summer use, which will promote growth. For Bonsai trees that have been styled, choose a Bonsai fertilizer with low N value. A Bonsai fertilizer less nitrogenous and high potassium is perfect to stop growth and prepare the plant for winter. A Bonsai fertilizer with a 3N-10P-10K value is recommended for use in late summer and during fall.
Fertilizing bonsai leaves
Following the instructions provided and dissolve the liquid Bonsai fertilizer in water and then simply spray it on the leaves of your Bonsai plant. This results in producing larger leaves, so apply it on a Bonsai you're still training.
