Where To Get Your Bonsai Plant Supplies

There are many different supplies needed for your Bonsai plants. Some are standard to any gardening effort but others are unique to Bonsai. When starting out as a Bonsai gardener, you won't need too many supplies, especially if you're getting started with an established plant. However, as you progress, you'll discover your're going to need several items to assist you in working with your Bonsai.
Bonsai Specialty Suppliers
With a bit of research, you'll be able to find many specialty Bonsai garden shops on the Internet. These suppliers will have many items that you find helpful for your Bonsai hobby including everything from containers to specialty plants. You can find many items online that aren't carried by other garden centers. Specialty shears, potting soil and fertilizer are easily obtained through an online Bonsai supplier. They also carry many specialized shaping tools designed specifically for Bonsai.
Garden Centers and Nurseries
For basic supplies, you can find those at any large garden center or nursery. Trimming shears, leaf cutting shears and pruning shears are common gardening requirements so any good garden supply should carry them. Get high-quality scissors and shears. Make sure your tools have sharp blades that make smooth, even cuts. Choose the smaller sizes whenever possible since the branches you'll be working with are usually quite small. Large sized cutting implements just won't fit in some of the tiny places you'll need to go. Also get a bag of potting soil, preferablly the type for indoor houseplants.
Hardware Stores
Some small hand tools should be available at your local hardware store. You'll need a tiny saw and some good snips. Again, choose the smallest versions you can find and make sure they're sharp. You can also get your wire supplies at the hardware store. Choose annealed copper wire or anodized aluminum wire in a gauge that suits your specific needs. Usually gauges between 12 and 20 are best for Bonsai. Make sure the wire is coiled and does not have any kinks in it. You can also get good pliers. You'll find the needle-nose variety very useful. Also consider getting some small bits of screen. These can also be obtained inexpensively at the hardware store.
