Growing Your Bonsai Tree from Seeds

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Did you know that you can grow bonsai from seeds? Of course, there isn't a magic bonsai seed that turns into the perfect bonsai tree once it's planted, but bonsai seeds are able to grow into those lovely “dwarfed trees” everyone loves. However, specific growing procedures and some patience are going to be required.

There are those who would tell you that growing a bonsai tree from bonsai seeds is a waste of time. Yes, you do have to accept that this is the most time-consuming method for growing bonsai, but for those who take on the task it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences.

The Japanese term to for cultivating bonsai from bonsai seeds is misho. The process taks take a lot of time, but if you want total control over your tree’s growth from the beginning, this is the best way to do it.

When you're getting started, you should gather all the “right” kinds of seeds for the type of bonsai tree you plant to grow. You should be able to find these at a horticultural shop. Once you've got your bonsai seeds, place them in water overnight in order to determine which seeds are going to be usable and those that won't. If any seeds float, they're unusable, but those that sink are the ones you'll be working with.

Before sowing your bonsai seeds, you must have a pot about 15 cm or 6” in depth and has a drainage hole. The lowest portion of the pot -- a quarter of the pot’s total volume -- should be filled with an earth mix, a mixture of akadama plus some fine gravel in equal proportions.

On top of that layer, put a mixture of fine akadama, potting compost, and fine gravel in 1/2, 1/4, and 1/4 ratios with this layer about 1” below the pot’s rim. Your bonsai seeds should be place on top of this layer, keeping them about 1” to 2” inch apart.

Finally, add the last layer which is a mixture of potting compost and akadama in equal ratios. Spray some water on top of the seedbed with a fine spray.

It's going to be a few years before you'll see your bonsai tree, but you're going to feel very fulfilled and satisfied knowing you grew that special bonsai from “scratch”.
