Choosing a Container for Bonsai Plants

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Choosing the right container for your Bonsai is an important part of successfully growing Bonsai. You'll discover that lots of different types of containers can be used for Bonsai.

Garden centers and Bonsai nurseries will provide a wide variety of containers suitable for Bonsai in a great selection of colors and shapes. Choose a container that harmonizes with the tree in both shape and color and is about two-thirds the height of the tree.

Materials

* Pottery: These are available in both glazed and unglazed versions. For outdoor Bonsai choose a glazed pot which will hlep it to better withstand the elements.

* Unglazed containers have a more natural look and are generally less expensive than glazed.

* Thick containers hold up better than thinner ones, but can also become too heavy if they are deep.

* Antique pots are often preferred over new ones for their aesthetic value. Make sure it's sturdy and doesn't have any cracks.

Shapes and Colors

* Simple shapes will enhance your Bonsai and add to the natural feel of the planting.

* For flowering plants, choose a color pot that complements the flowers without blending in.

* For foliage plants, brown, earthy colors look more natural.

* Slanted or leaning shaped Bonsai look best in rectangular shaped containers.

* Keep in mind the scale of your Bonsai when choosing the container. The pot shouldn't overpower the Bonsai plant.

Other Considerations

* Drainage holes: Choose a container with at least two holes in the bottom for drainage as well as for securing the plant into its proper growing position.

* The container should be prepared by soaking it in clean water for a day or two before planting to ensure the pot doesn't absorb any excess water from the potting soil.

* Use plastic coated wires inserted into the bottom holes to secure the root ball on larger plants.

* Make sure you get a container that is large enough to hold plenty of soil around the roots of the plants.
