Chapter
5: Climate
Bud
Brownmud had a slightly embarrassed look. "Uh, Scott," he
said, "this may sound dumb, but it's late fall now. What if I
start growing grass from seed and an overnight freeze comes?
Will the grass die? And another thing I've been wondering
about ... our climate has a lot of extremes. Cold winters, hot
summers ... how does that affect what we're
doing."
"Good questions, all," Scott allowed. "Since we
live in an inland climate that's right between temperate and
sub-tropical, all of that will be a factor in how we select
grass for your lawn and how you'll care for
it."
Where you live plays a huge role in how you
approach the installation and maintenance of your lawn.
First, you must take a hard
look at the climate in which you live. Check out the map on
the previous page, which will help you better determine what
grasses will survive and grow best in your lawn location.
This critical information
applies to both lawn and pasture uses for grasses. It doesn't
do you any good to buy and plant a warm-season grass only to
find that the hard freeze that is normal for your winter will
kill the grass. The same goes for cool-season grasses when the
summer temps shrivel your grass to nothing. Finding the right
grass or mix of grasses is an important step in planting and
obtaining a great lawn.
Below are some more maps and
suggestions for which climates are best suited to which
grasses.
