The Moth Orchid is a Unique
and Wonderful Plant
Few plants are as well suited to growing
inside your house as well as outside. Of these few plants,
one of the most beautiful and unique is the moth
orchid — a flowering plant with natural
characteristics that greatly separate it from its other flowering
cousins.
Among this type of orchid plant, there
are more than sixty varieties, each suited to
different climates and each bearing its own unique color
scheme.
No matter where you live or what taste you have in
colors, there is a moth orchid species that will suit your needs and
your style.
While this type of orchid is referred to by many
people as the moth orchid, it's actually categorized under the name
of phalaenopsis orchid. However, since it's Greek name is a bit
difficult to pronounce, moth orchid has become the common name
for this plant.
In the wild, the majority
of these orchids are found in parts of Asia and Australia, with
a quite large growth found on, aptly named, Orchid
Island off the coast of Taiwan.
Nearly every type of
moth orchid is known as an epiphyte — a type of
plant that grows attached to another plant. There are also
certain species of this unique plant that can grow best as a
lithophyte — one that grows best when attached to a rock
or some other mineral from the earth. Since they grow so well
in atmospheres with lots of trees or rocks, you can generally find a
moth orchid inhabiting a lowland forest.
The moth orchid is a great choice for
your home or garden if you
can create the right environment for its growth.
In many parts of the world, it's easier to grow a moth orchid
indoors because they don't thrive very well under
harsh light condition.
In climates that have bright sunlight, it's
best not to try to grow this type of orchid outdoors, unless you have plenty
of shade trees or awnings that will protect the plant from direct sunlight.
No matter how
dry, cold or moist your climate is, you'll have a well growing
orchid so long as you can keep it out of direct sunlight most of the
time.
