A Palm Tree Celebration
from: Lawn and Garden MagicMany casual, as well as professional landscapers alike work to capture a tropical feel to their lawn or garden. The best way to do this, of course, is to take components from tropical locales and transplant them to the project area. One such component, and perhaps the most effective one, is a palm tree.
A palm tree belongs to the genus Arecaceae (also known as Palmae). Its distinctive features are the following:
* Branchless trunks that can grow as high as 40 feet.
* Stems that shoot out from the top of the trunk.
* Long, thin, palmate leaves that shoot out from the said stems.
A lot of plants belong to the Palm family, all sharing these features, varying only in the average sizes. There are more than 300 trees and plants belonging to this genus, and a lot of them are common in the mainland.
The palm tree type is quite resistant to many types of weather and climatic conditions. By tracing their origin to the tropics, you'll discover the palm was able to withstand the scorching heat of the summer months, but they can also tolerant biting cold as well.
Another benefit is that palms require little maintenance. Adequate sunlight and ample supply of water is enough to keep them healthy and they grow well in most soil types. Their roots are capable of retaining water for many, many days.
Thus the palm tree is an ideal landscape tree for many areas. They aren't especially picky or demanding for any home owner.
Some palms bear fruits, others bear flowers, and a few bear both. The huge variety available to landscape artist makes a palm tree a very versatile option providing many design possibilities.
Palms also have a unique and mysterious way of inviting a cool breeze. Whether their long, thin leaves serve as wind callers, or whether this just a myth, the fact remains, the mere sight of a palm tree conjures up images of an exotic island paradise perfect for hours of rest and relaxation.
One of the best uses of palms is a pond-type water garden that truly captures a tropical flavor for any landscape. However, even if these trees are planted in areas without a waterscape, they'll still bring the environment to life. Just their presence adds many splendors to any garden or lawn.
