The Perils of Red Wood Trees

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

There's little doubt that anyone who is face to face with the towering majesty of a redwood tree is going to experiences a sense of awe.

Redwoods aren't really known for a lot of things, except for the fact they grow tall -- very, very tall. Redwoods can be observed along roadsides during cross-country trips. Sometimes, during the wake of a violent storm, these trees can obstruct the road, causing traffic to buildup on routes that don't get a lot of traffic. Yes, redwoods are big, and if one should fall over, they're very difficult to move.

Falling over is actually normal for most redwoods due to their shallow roots, which sometimes can't support the maxxive weight of the trees themselves. Thus, redwoods are often planted on hillsides, where the slope will give their roots a better grip on the soil.

This is why a redwood tree aren't really suitable for home landscape designs.

Yet, if you search on the internet you'll discover lots of people who are actually considering planting redwood saplings in their backyard. Is this decision prudent?

It really depends on the size and the layout of your lawn. If you have a very spacious lawn, then transplanting redwood saplings can actually work, provided there's a large enough space between their location and any building and structure. This is a precautionary measure in the event that the redwood tree should fall over. Redwoods are heavy, and they'll definitely crush any building they would fall onto.

Since they have shallow roots, redwoods aren't really a good option to prevent erosion. Therefors, if you have a cabin, for example, situated in the foot of a hill, planting redwoods on the hillside won't make the ground stronger. In fact, given the weight of the redwood tree and how little the depth its roots can plant themselves into, there's actually a greater danger of erosion if you decide to place these trees by the hillside.

Redwoods, despite their magical majestic nature, making them an options for landscape artists, aren't really practical choices for most home owners. If you want to enjoy the beauty of these trees, requirements must be met, such as the available space of a sizable area and a good layout.
