Eliminating Pond Weeds

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

So, you've finally got your own pond after investing many dollars and hours of hard work. You've finally been able to think about the wonderful delights your pond will provide for your household for many years to come.

However, once you've observed the rapid growth of pond weeds on the water, you also realize it's going to take some work. These weeds certainly reduce the beauty of your pond, but this isn't the only evil they bring. These weeds could also destroy the ecosystem you've worked to hard to establish for your pond. They will steal critical nutrients from your water plants and may eventually obliterate them if you're not careful. This means less oxygen and food for your fishes who are also staring at the possibility of being eliminated.

In addition, these nasty pond weeds, if allowed to thrive, will likely become the breeding ground for pests and dangerous creatures, such as snakes and mosquitoes, which could be hazardous to the health and well being of anyone nearby.

So it's obvious you're going to have to take action against pond weeds. The good news is that you aren't completely powerless against them. Here are some tips to help you eliminate these unwanted pond weeds:

* Make sure you always maintain a running stream of water in your pond which prevents it from stagnation, which is the main reason for the growth of weeds. This can be done by simply integrating a waterfall in your setup, or just a more powerful pump that will keep the water in the pond moving.

* Try some herbicides specially formulated to kill weeds -- and only weeds. They should be safe for your water plants and fishes.

* Integrate a skimmer for your pond. Skimmers clean the surface of the water from the slightest intrusion of foreign objects. This gets rid of seeds and sprouts before they can develop into full sized weeds.

* If worse comes to worst, you may have to try the manual approach, which is simply hand pulling the weeds from the pond. This can be a bit difficult, however, it's a must, especially if weeds have taken over a sizable area of the water.

These methods are the most efficient. They allow you to deal with the dangers that weeds bring as well as maintain a wonderful pond that everyone can truly enjoy.
