Effective Weed Control

from: Lawn and Garden Magic

Weeds are a gardener's worst nightmare -- period! Weeds are capable of rapidly taking over any garden, much like those gremlins in the Steven Spielberg movie. They multiply at an alarming rate once they come in contact with water. However, unlike those movie gremlins, you can't choose not to water them, since your plants need water.

Therefore, weed control is an important task for gardeners everywhere. It's a necessary skill because weeds will deprive your plants of needed nutrients. Since weeds are quite aggressive, they directly compete for all nutrients and your real plants are going to be outnumbered, weeds are going to win the war if they're allowed to thrive.

Weeds are also dangerous because they promote the infestation of pests and bugs that will destroy the leaves, stems and roots of your growing crops.

Here are a few ways to deal with these nasty plants:

1. Pull out the weeds that grown in your garden regularly. However, since weeds leave their seeds, or seedlings, even after you pull out the visible ones new batches will persistent in growing in your garden, over and over again. Therefore, pulling them out once is only a temporary measure and to be the most effective weed control, this task must be repeated over and over again.

2. Till the soil. This is more efficient, and actually easier, then manually pulling out the weeds. However, weeds are very persistent and no amount of tilling will get rid of them.

3. Mulching the soil is the best weed control remedy available for you because it works at so many levels. First, it kills existing weeds. Second, it stops the growth of seeds and seedlings. Third, it encourages the growth of "garden allies" such as earthworms, who continuously work underground to provide the best soil for your plants. Fourth, it ensures the soil has adequate moisture for the healthy growth of your plants. Finally, mulching has long term benefits, providing a semi-permanent solution to your weed problems.

The spread of weeds in your garden is a necessary evil of this wonderful hobby, so never give up. Diligence and patience will defeat weeds and you'll be proud of the lovely growth of your garden vegetables and/or flowers.
