Water Delivery Strategies in Historic Rome

Water Delivery Strategies in Historic Rome Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, inhabitants residing at higher elevations had to rely on local creeks for their water. When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people dwelling at raised elevations turned to water removed from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns. To deliver water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they employed the new strategy of redirecting the stream from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it easier to preserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to fulfill his needs. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran directly below his residential property.
